Substitutions and Additions

  • Melted Chocolate – Make traditional puppy chow with melted chocolate. You can use semi sweet chocolate chips or white chocolate chips.
  • Cream Cheese and Milk – You can add in 2 tablespoons of milk to add a creamier texture.
  • Holiday Snack – We make this snack for Christmas and it is also perfect for Valentine’s Day. You can easily use different types of sprinkles.

How to Make Red Velvet Puppy Chow

  • Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 – Spread the 2 cups of red velvet cake mix on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes.  Then allow the cake mix to cool before using.

Step 3 – Place the cream cheese frosting in a large microwave-safe bowl.  Heat the frosting in 20 second intervals until melted.

Step 4 – Then gently mix in the Chex cereal.  Gently fold the cereal until it’s coated with the cream cheese frosting.

Step 5 – Place the cooled red velvet cake mix and powdered sugar in a sealed bag.  Shake to thoroughly combine the 2 in the bag. 

  • Step 6 – Then work in batches, add the coated cereal into the bag. Seal and shake until the cereal is coated with the red velvet mixture.
  • Step 7 – Remove the coated puppy chow and spread it out onto the baking sheet to cool.  Continue this process until all the cereal is coated and the puppy chow is made.
  • Step 8 – Allow the puppy chow cool completely.  Then toss in the sprinkles right before serving.
  • Step 9 – Then the red velvet puppy chow is ready to serve and enjoy.

Recipe Tips

  • Red Velvet Cake Mix – Bake the Cake for about 5 minutes before mixing it with the other ingredients. Make sure to bake the cake because of the raw ingredients in the cake mix.
  • Melting Cream Cheese – Melt cream cheese in 20 seconds intervals until melted in a large bowl. Do not over cook as you do not want the cream cheese to melt.
  • Combining Ingredients – When combining the ingredients together, make sure you gently toss together.
  • Adding Sprinkles – Add sprinkles once the cereal mixture has cooled down.
