My kids love it when I make buttermilk pancakes into a fun and festive holiday pancakes. If you kids are fans of the buddy the Elf, then you need to make this pancake recipe.

Variation Ideas

  • Nutella – We used Nutella to make the mouth and hair but you can also use chocolate syrup. You can even give your elf eyebrows.
  • Mini Marshmallows – You can also decorate the face with mini marshmallows instead of whipped cream.
  • Add Sprinkles – We have added sprinkles to the pancake batter or shimmery elf sprinkles to the top.
  • For elf’s eyes – Instead of using chocolate chips, add M&M or grapes.
  • Food Coloring – Add food coloring to the mini pancake mix for a fun and festive look.

How to Make Elf Pancakes

For the Pancakes: 

  • Step 1 – Whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl

Step 2 – In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, milk and vanilla. 

Combine all the pancake batter together in a bowl with a spatula

Step 3 – Whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, then stir in the melted butter.

Cooking Elf Pancake Faces on the Griddle

Step 4 – Heat a nonstick griddle or skillet over medium heat. You can may need to spray cooking spray. Pour ⅓ cup batter onto the griddle for each pancake to make the faces of the Elves.

Step 5 – Place a large pancake on each serving plate.  Place 2 smaller pancakes on each side of the large pancakes to make the elf ears.

Step 6 – Use the raspberries to make the design of the hats on the elves. Also to use for the Rosie cheeks on the elves.

Step 7 – Make the Elfs’ eyes with the chocolate chips. Make the elf’s beard whipped cream.  Then use the whipped cream to decorate the elves’ hats.  Use Nutella to make the mouths and hair. The pancakes are ready to serve.

Recipe Tips

  • Cooking Pancakes – Cook pancakes mix on medium-low heat. If you care cooking on a skillet you will need to work in batches. The total time to make these pancakes is about 15 minutes.
  • Prepare Pan – Make sure to preheat skillet or griddle and melt butter on the skillet before adding pancake batter.

Ingredients

For the Pancakes:

  • 1 1/4 cup Flour
  • 2 tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla
  • 1 tbsp melted Butter

To Make An Elf:

  • 18 ounces Raspberries
  • ¼ cup Chocolate Chips
  • ¼ cup Nutella
  • Whipped Cream

Instructions

For the Pancakes:

  • Whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder and salt.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, milk and vanilla.
  • Whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, then stir in the melted butter.
  • Heat a nonstick griddle or skillet over medium heat.
  • Pour ⅓ cup batter onto the griddle for each pancake to make the faces of the Elves.
  • Cook until bubbles form in the middle, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Remove from the griddle.
  • Continue this process to make approximately 6 large pancakes.
  • Then make approximately 12 small oval pancakes as well for the ears of the elves.

To Serve:

  • Place a pancake on each serving plate.  Place 2 small oval pancakes on each side of the large pancakes to make the elf ears.
  • Use the raspberries to make the design of the hats on the elves and to use for the rosie cheeks on the elves.
  • Make the faces with the chocolate chips and whipped cream.  Then use the whipped cream to decorate the elves’ hats.
  • Place the nutella in a ziplock bag.  Cut off a corner of the bag and use the nutella to make the mouths and hair around the edge of the hats on the elves.
  • Then the pancakes are ready to serve and enjoy with syrup!
