Substitutions and Additions
- Toppings – We love hot chocolate and marshmallows. But feel free to change them to sprinkles, peppermint candy, or crushed candy canes. We love the peppermint flavor mixed with the chocolate.
- Add in Extract – If you want to add in extra flavor to your chocolate, simple add in a few drops of extract. We love peppermint, orange, or vanilla.
- Drizzle Chocolate – Another fun way to add to the presentation is to drizzle chocolate to the tops. White chocolate or caramel are great options.
- Sea Salt – If you love the sweet and salty flavor, sprinkle sea salt to the tops of the chocolate.
- Hot Chocolate Bar – If you are having a holiday, make a hot cocoa bar. Set out the room temperature ingredients with your hot chocolate on a stick. Pour the milk in the glass and everyone can add their favorite toppings.

- Step 1 – Prepare Cube Trays – Place 2 ice cube trays on a baking sheet.
Step 3 – Place chocolate in bowls – Place the chopped chocolate and chocolate chips in a heat resistant bowl.
Step 4 – Heat milk & cream – In a saucepan, heat together the sweetened condensed milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium heat. Stir and bring the mixture to a low simmer. Make sure to stir frequently so that the milk does not boil over or burn.
Step 5 – Pour melted mixture over chocolate – Once the mixture is simmering, pour the mixture over the chocolate in a bowl. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes to melt the chocolate. Then stir until the chocolate is fully melted and all the ingredients are combined.
Step 6 – Pipe into ice cube trays – Transfer the mixture to a piping bag. Pipe the mixture into each of the ice cube trays filling them up approximately ¾ of the way full.

Serve warm and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Quality Chocolate – Since this recipe has very few ingredients, we recommend using quality chocolate. We recommend semi sweet chocolate and choose from brands such as Ghirardelli or Nestle.
- Sticks – Use sticks that are food grade popsicle sticks. You do not want to choose the ones in the arts and crafts section.
- Molds – We used ice cube trays for this recipe, but you can also choose to use silicone molds.
- Chocolate Mixture – Before pouring the chocolate into the ice cube tray make sure it is smooth and creamy. You may need to heat it a little bit longer to complete stir in the milk and chocolate.
- Piping Bags – We recommend using piping bags to fill the ice cube trays. It makes less of a mess and it is easier to pour the chocolate evenly.
- Whole Milk – This recipe is best used with whole milk or cream. It will not be as rich and creamy if reduced fat milk is used.
- Filling the Trays – When filling the ice cube trays with chocolate make sure you leave room to add your favorite toppings.
- Inserting the sticks – As the hot chocolate is cooling in the fridge, I like to check on it frequently. This ensure that the sticks are still centered in the chocolate and hasn’t fell over.
- Heating the Cream and Milk – When heating the cream and milk, make sure it comes to a slight boil. You do not want to over cook or burn the milk.
