What size of Crock Pot do you need?

We made these dinner rolls in a 6 qt crock pot. You can easily use a 5 quart as well. We love this Instant Pot Aura crock pot because of the multi-function options it has.

Ingredients needed - flour, water, yeast, honey, salt, butter

Ingredients:

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Warm Water
  • Active Dry Yeast 2 ¼ teaspoons
  • Honey
  • Salt
  • Melted Butter, divided

How to Make Dinner Rolls in the Slow Cooker:

  • Step 1 – Mix Water and Yeast – Mix the warm water with the yeast in a large mixing bowl.
  • Step 2 – Cover Yeast Mixture – Cover and let it sit for 5 minutes for the yeast to activate. You’ll know the yeast is activated because the mixture will start to bubble.
  • Step 3 – Stir in Honey, Salt and Butter – Then stir in the honey, salt and ¼ cup of the melted butter.
  • Step 4 – Mix Ingredients – Using a dough hook, mix in the flour slowly on medium speed.
  • Step 5 – Form into Dough – Slowly add in the flour until the dough is formed.  You’ll know the dough is ready when it cleans the sides of the mixing bowl.
  • Step 6 – Rest Dough – Then cover the bowl with a towel and let it sit at room temperature for about an hour until the dough has doubled in size.

  • Step 7 – Divide the Dough – Then punch down the dough and divide the dough evenly into 9 even sections.  Then roll each section into a ball.
  • Step 8 – Place dough in Slow Cooker – Line a 6 quart slow cooker with parchment paper and place the dough balls in the base on the slow cooker on the parchment paper.

  • Step 9 – Slow Cook – Cover and cook on high for 1-1/12 hours until the edges are lightly golden brown (the bottom of the rolls should be brown as well).
  • Step 10 – Remove the Rolls – Then carefully remove the rolls from the slow cooker using the parchment paper and place on a baking sheet.
  • Step 11 – Top with Melted Butter – Brush the top of the rolls with the remaining melted butter and then broil them for 1-2 minutes to brown the top of the rolls slightly.

Tips for the Best Crockpot Dinner Rolls:

  • Mix Ingredients – Slowly add in the flour into the yeast mixture until dough forms. We recommend mixing the ingredients with stand mixer for best results.
  • Line Crock Pot – To easily remove the rolls from the slow cooker, make sure to line the it with parchment paper.
  • Dough – Allow the dough to double in size before dividing. This usually takes about an hour to double the dough.
  • Ingredients – Make sure you are using fresh ingredients. Before using the yeast, make sure it has not expired.
  • Bake Rolls – After cooking the rolls in the crock pot, we like to place in the oven to broil. This allows the rolls to brown on the top.
  • Cook Time – Cooking time may very based on your slow cooker.
  • Serving – Serve your rolls with butter, honey or garlic butter. There is nothing better than a hot roll and butter.

How to Freeze Homemade Dinner Rolls:

Christmas dinner is always served at my house. To prepare what I can ahead of time, I like to prepare these rolls. The great thing about this recipe is you can freeze the dough balls or freeze the cooked rolls.

Prepare the dough as indicated and divide the dough. Place the dough balls in a freezer safe container that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and freeze.

If you want to freeze your leftover rolls, place in an air tight container after they have cooled.

When you are ready to bake, thaw your frozen rolls in the fridge overnight. We recommend the dough to be completely thawed before placing in the slow cooker. You can bake frozen cooked rolls, but watch closely so they do not burn.
