How to Make Dinner Rolls in the Slow Cooker

Yeast and water in a mixing bowl

Step 1 – Mix Water and Yeast – Mix the warm water with the yeast in a large mixing bowl. Cover and let it sit for 5 minutes for the yeast to activate. You’ll know the yeast is activated because the mixture will start to bubble.

Stirring in honey, salt and butter

Step 2 – Then stir in the honey, salt and ¼ cup of the melted butter.

Mix in flour to the yeast mixture and combine

Step 3 – Using a dough hook, mix in the flour slowly on medium speed.  Slowly add in the flour until the dough is formed.  You’ll know the dough is ready when it cleans the sides of the mixing bowl.

Step 4 – Then cover the bowl with a towel and let it sit at room temperature for about an hour until the dough has doubled in size.

Divide the dough into 9 section on a floured surface

Step 5 – Then punch down the dough and divide the dough evenly into 9 even sections.  Then roll each section into a ball.

  • Line Crock Pot – To easily remove the rolls from the slow cooker, make sure to line the it with parchment paper.
  • Dough – Allow the dough to double in size before dividing. This usually takes about an hour to double the dough.
  • Ingredients – Make sure you are using fresh ingredients. Before using the yeast, make sure it has not expired.
  • Bake Rolls – After cooking the rolls in the crock pot, we like to place in the oven to broil. This allows the rolls to brown on the top.

How to Freeze Homemade Dinner Rolls

Christmas dinner is always served at my house. To prepare what I can ahead of time, I like to prepare these rolls. The great thing about this recipe is you can freeze the dough balls or freeze the cooked rolls.

Prepare the dough as indicated and divide the dough. Place the dough balls in a freezer safe container that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and freeze.

If you want to freeze your leftover rolls, place in an air tight container after they have cooled.

When you are ready to bake, thaw your frozen rolls in the fridge overnight. We recommend the dough to be completely thawed before placing in the slow cooker. You can bake frozen cooked rolls, but watch closely so they do not burn.
