Substitutions and Additions
- Meat – Feel free to change the meat to ground beef. Sometimes I will use half ground turkey and half ground beef. It would be delicious with added Italian Sausage or ground turkey sausage.
- Cheese – You can use different cheese in this lasagna. Substitute cottage cheese with the ricotta mixture.
- Add in Vegetables – Add in vegetables to this turkey lasagna recipe. Lasagna is a great recipe to sneak in spinach, kale, or peppers.
- Tomato Sauce – We used crushed tomatoes in this recipe, but you can substitute for tomato sauce.
- Lasagna Noodles – Feel free to use Whole Wheat Lasagna Noodles.
How to Make Ground Turkey Lasagna in the Crockpot
Step 1 – Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add in the ground turkey and diced onions. Sauté until the onions are soft and the turkey is browned. Then add in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
Step 2 – Then add in the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, Italian Seasoning, salt and pepper. Stir and cook for 7-8 minutes until heated through and well combined. Then remove the pan from the heat.
Step 3 – In a separate bowl, stir together the ricotta cheese, 1 ½ cups mozzarella cheese and Parmesan Cheese.
Step 4 – Pour a layer of sauce on the bottom of the crock pot (approximately 1-1 ½ cups). Then place a layer of the lasagna noodles on top. Then layer approximately ⅓ of the cheese mixture on top followed by approximately 1 cup of the ground turkey sauce.
- Step 5 – Repeat these layers 2 more times making sure to end with the meat sauce. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cups of the mozzarella cheese on top.
- Step 6 – Cover and cook the lasagna on low for 4-5 hours until the noodles are soft.
- Step 7 – Then turn the crock pot off and let the lasagna rest for 20-30 minutes before serving. The lasagna is ready to serve and enjoy! For additional cheese flavor, top with ¼ cup of parmesan cheese and fresh parsley.
Expert Tips
- Ground Turkey – Cook turkey in the skillet until no longer pink. We recommend cooking the turkey in a separate pan. If you have a slow cooker that you can cook the turkey in then that works too.
- Combine Ingredients – Combine the ground turkey mixture together thoroughly. This helps the layers of noodles to cook in the slow cooker.
- Baking Dish – Instead of cooking the ground turkey in the slow cooker, it can be made in the oven. Layer the ingredients in a baking dish and bake until the cheese is golden brown.
- Uncooked Noodles – Use regular uncook lasagna noodles to prepare the meal. You can use wheat or white lasagna noodles and they both taste great.
- Let lasagna Rest – After cooking lasagna, make sure you let it rest for at least 25 minutes. This makes it easier to slice and serve.
What to Serve with Ground Turkey Lasagna
- Garlic Bread Sticks – This garlic bread sticks recipe is the perfect side. I love to dip the bread sticks in the tomato sauce.
- Roasted Vegetables – Roast broccoli or asparagus in the oven for a delicious side.
- Garden Salad – Make a delicious green salad to pair with this turkey lasagna. Turkey lasagna is so hearty that I like to serve a light side.
